Pearls are organic gems, softer than most stones and sensitive to chemicals. A few habits keep them luminous for decades.
Wearing
- Put your pearls on last, after make-up, perfume and hairspray, and take them off first.
- Avoid contact with water, lotion, sunscreen and household cleaners.
- Take rings and bracelets off before sports, gardening or washing your hands.
Cleaning
- Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth after wearing.
- Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam, toothpaste or jewelry dips.
- Silver findings can be polished with a silver cloth; keep the cloth away from the pearls.
Storing
- Store flat, in the pouch or box, separate from other jewelry that could scratch the nacre.
- Do not seal pearls in airtight plastic for long periods; they need a little humidity.
- Have knotted strands checked and re-strung every few years with regular wear.
Gold-plated pieces
Plating keeps its color longest when kept dry and stored out of direct sunlight. Wipe gently; never rub with abrasive cloths.
